QUESTION ANSWER SUMMARY AND NOTES START TIME
Roofs – how to add an overhang on added or dormer roof. In order to be able to extend the roof, you have to break the connection with the other roof. Then cut a hole in the main roof to allow the wall to extend upward. Go to the pet palette and select the subtraction tool to cut the hole. The wall below will now extend to the added roof above. Now you can extend the upper added roof for the overhang. Then interior wall should be connected to the upper roof not the lower allowing it to rise to upper roof through cut hole in lower roof. If you want the additional roof to be a dormer and do not want the interior wall of the dormer to extend below the main roof you would extend the main roof over the wall and trim the wall below by selecting the wall, right clicking and select Connect>Trim Elements to Roof/Shell and then click on the roof and decide which part of the wall to keep by selecting it. To clean up the corners, redraw the upper wall and connect it to both roofs keeping the part of the wall between them. Take a section to look at clean up and use Solid Element Operations to clean up walls. Use the Connect tool to further clean up wall intersections. 0:00:37
How to see the skin at the end of a wall. Use the Wall End Tool located in the More section of the Toolbox. Use the tool to click on the end of the wall to change its appearance. There are several variations for the wall end in the tool settings to choose from. The depth of the end is variable and can be edited all the way to the end of the wall. The wrapped end only allows you to wrap the end in one layer. Alternately you can wrap the wall around and turn off the end line to get a double wrapped wall end. This is not clean in True Line Weight. 0:18:35
How to calculate the area of a skin (or drywall). Quantity take-offs is a complex topic, but a quick way is to go to Window>Palettes>Element Information. Element Information allows you to see information about select elements. In order to get a total volume for a number of walls go to Lists in Project Map and go to Quick Walls to see summaries of wall information. You can also go to Project Map>Components>All Components to see more information. 0:27:30
Joining vertical curtain walls elements with sloping curtain wall elements. Is there a quick way to align the sloped section to the vertical section accurately? If you want to join the vertical wall to the roof curtain wall, click on the vertical wall and click on the edit button. It will show the context but not allow you to edit the context. Go into the Scheme of the curtain wall and gives you a selectable wall. Now you can extend or reduce the size. Bring it down below the roof plane. You will not have snap-able feedback and will not join the curtain wall and this is the best you can do. You can use Solid Element Operations to clean up the connection some more. You can not select both curtain walls and edit them at the same time unless they are part of the same system. To remove the frame on the roof curtain wall, select it and then select Edit. From here you can edit the frame making it invisible or 0 depth to remove it visibly. 0:31:45
How to get multiple skin composite wall intersections to read correctly in plan without having to change the reference line location. Can you use Junction Order to clean this up? You can adjust walls that are not connected by using the Adjust tool while one wall is selected and clicking on the center line of the wall to be connected to. This has nothing to do with junction order, but making sure the reference lines of both walls touch. No other clean up seemed necessary for this file. 0:42:17
Quick Start and ArchiCAD 17 differences Quick Start lessons were done for an early version. Eric will redo the Quick Start course, but in the meantime he will be finishing up the main course lessons first. Under Best Practices Course>Advanced Lessons>ArchiCAD 17 New Features there is good information for what it used to look like and how it is now. Guide lines lessons can be found in Best Practices Course>Modules 10 – 15>Week#13 Aligning and Placing Elements>13-1 Guide Lines. 0:52:35
Sections can be shown as a reference under the plan. With Trace Reference you can show one section at a time on the plan view. You can use the Trace & Reference Palette to adjust. 0:56:20
Walls showing as Outlines Only instead of Projected. Go to the Wall Tool>Floor Plan Display>Project with… then make your selection. If you are working from a template you will need to set your template file to have the wall display you want as your default setting. If you have Outline Only selected then doors and windows do not display on plan, but they do with Symbolic or Projected with Overhead. 1:01:10
