Week #17 – Complex Modeling
17-4. Non-Vertical Walls

ArchiCAD Training (Best Practices Lesson 17-4)

In this 22 minute ArchiCAD training we look at the basic options for creating non-vertical walls: slanted and double-slanted (a.k.a. “battered”) walls.

You may select these different wall types directly in the Info Box before you draw the wall or walls, or take a vertical wall and slant it using the pet palette in 3D, Section or Elevation views.

NOTE: I have found that switching a selected wall in the Info Box from vertical to slanted or double-slanted may sometimes cause strange results, as the default angle settings (at least in the standard ArchiCAD 16 U.S. template) are odd. Watch the video for how I avoid or fix these issues when they come up.

Pet palette manipulations are shown that allow you to change the slant angles of these walls and/or change the height.

There are several Floor Plan Display options that can be set for non-vertical walls, either in the Info Box or in the Wall Settings dialog. Projected with Overhead is the most common, and shows the cut plane of the wall in one pen weight, the lower (projected) part of the wall in a second pen, and the overhead linework in a third pen. Other variations are shown and demonstrated in this lesson and may be used depending on your preferences and the project context.

Windows and Doors may be Vertical or have their opening plane be “Associated to Wall”. In some cases, you may want to change the Window (or Door) Settings > General Settings > Wall Closure to “Solid Wall” in order to be able to set a Reveal Depth properly. In addition, you may find it useful to turn off the Casing, Sill and/or Stool to get a clean result in your 3D model.
